21.1 Why preservation matters here
Rocket Racing is a fully server side mode inside Fortnite. When Epic pulls the plug in October 2026 (no exact day announced as of July 2026; gamerant.com), the mode does not go into “abandonware” limbo like a delisted retail game: all official tracks and all user created Rocket Racing UEFN islands will be deleted outright, and every UEFN island built on RR templates will close (kotaku.com). The only in game survivors are Vehicle Locker cosmetics, which remain usable in other Fortnite modes (tracker.gg). Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage already went dark on April 16, 2026 with v40.20 (gameinformer.com); the capture window for live RR is roughly three months and closing. The decay is alredy underway: quests, ranked rewards, and the UEFN track creation template were all pulled within weeks of the announcement (wind down timeline: Section 17) (gamefragger.com).
21.2 What can and cannot be preserved
- Cannot be preserved: the mode itself. Client + server logic lives on Epic infrastructure; there is no offline build or LAN mode, and no known private server project. The research found no organized track archiving or ghost replay preservation project as of July 2026.
- Can be preserved: (1) web pages and documentation (Wayback/save page now); (2) video: event reveals, full track gameplay, tutorials, streams; (3) structured data: speedrun.com leaderboards (4,003 runs / 449 players / 60 levels), fortnite.gg CCU charts, wiki track lists (53 tracks: 20 Novice / 18 Advanced / 15 Expert per fortnite.fandom.com); (4) community discussion: Reddit dumps, Discord exports; (5) track layout knowledge via route videos, even though the playable islands themselves get deleted; (6) music (khinsider, koba.cat/fortniteost).
21.3 Wayback Machine coverage and snapshot procedure
Honesty note: the researcher’s environment hard blocked web.archive.org (both CDX API and snapshot playback), so existing Wayback coverage of RR pages is unverified: the items below are capture targets, not confirmed holdings (checked 2026-07-11).
Procedure from an unblocked network: paste each URL into https://web.archive.org/save/ (Save Page Now), then confirm coverage via CDX: https://web.archive.org/cdx/search/cdx?url=<URL>&output=json. Priority targets identified in the research:
- Epic help FAQ: “Why are Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage being removed?” · Epic’s official removal rationale; 403s to automated fetchers, flagged top priority capture target.
- @FortniteStatus shutdown post (Mar 24, 2026) · primary source announcement; robots blocked, archive via Wayback.
- fortnite.com/news/tag/rocket-racing · Epic’s own tag index of the official RR news posts (Dec 2023 to Oct 2024); archive each slug, especially the v31.40 finale (“goodbye to Inferno Island and themed updates”) and the Dec 2023 launch post.
- UEFN docs · still live with no sunset banner as of 2026-07-11 despite the template already being pulled; re snapshot monthly until October: Working with Rocket Racing Islands (lists all 9 RR devices), plus device pages for Active Track Volume, Speed Run Manager, Competitive Race Manager, Player Start Position.
- Official island page · live CCU counter (383 on 2026-07-11); snapshot repeatedly to document the decline series until removal.
- Bot blocked stats pages needing manual/browser capture: fortnite.gg ranked leaderboard, fortnite.gg RR CCU chart (JS rendered), fortnite.gg community track directory (tracks facing deletion), fortnitetracker.com ranked leaderboard, TechRaptor launch CCU article.
21.4 Reddit: Pushshift successors
reddit.com and arctic-shift.photon-reddit.com were both blocked in the research environment, so r/RocketRacing launch week sentiment and shutdown megathreads remain unrecovered; that recovery is an open task. Tooling identified:
- Arctic Shift · working Pushshift successor; recommended route for bulk r/RocketRacing post/comment recovery. Check its status page first to verify 2026 ingestion coverage before relying on it.
- Reveddit · removed comment recovery / moderation history.
- Unddit / PullPush · alternate deleted content viewer for launch and shutdown threads.
21.5 Discord
The official developer run server (discord.com/invite/rocketracing, created Nov 27, 2023) had 3,140 members / 833 online in July 2026 (server listing); a community run “Rocket Racing League” server is listed on Disboard. Channel exports via DiscordChatExporter are the natural complement here, since Discord content is invisible to the Wayback Machine. Prioritize announcement, patch notes, and shutdown reaction channels; export HTML+JSON with media.
21.6 YouTube / video
Already safe on the Internet Archive (verified reachable; archive.org proper worked even where web.archive.org was blocked):
- fn_the_big_bang · Dec 2, 2023 Big Bang event that revealed RR; 2.8 GB MP4, ~17 min.
- 12-8-23-fn-racing-lego-p-2 · 6.4-hour launch day stream (7.2 GB) with chat transcript JSON.
- Plus items 12-16-23-fn-customs, 4-6-24-fn-customs, fortnite-12-23-2024-18-50-25-0, for 8 items total via the advanced search API.
Still on YouTube only; download (yt-dlp) and/or mirror to archive.org: official UEFN template tutorial (tool it documents is already removed), best route for every Expert track (the closest thing to track layout documentation that survives deletion), full track pool gameplay. TikTok shutdown reactions aggregate under the “Rocket Racing Discontinue” tag (robots blocked; manual capture).
21.7 UEFN island migration
Epic promised generic car physics, hazard, and track building tools in base UEFN in April 2026 as a migration path so creators can port compatible RR content to standalone islands before October (gamedeveloper.com). This is the only official route by which any playable track geometry survives: unmigrated RR template islands are deleted. The community side complement is the maintainer’s ShrezesUverse tooling (Section 7.2): the RR Asset Pack uncooks the full official DelMar content set into UEFN usable form for rebuilds, and the Track Converter revalidates old tracks that Epic’s updates broke. The research did not verify whether the April tools actually shipped or how many creators migrated; the Epic dev forums bug thread on RR races failing to start in Creative islands documents pre shutdown decay of RR in UEFN.
21.8 Structured data targets
- speedrun.com/Rocket_Racing · where RR time trial history actually lives: 4,003 runs, 449 players, 60 levels, 484 followers, still verifying runs in July 2026; version split boards encode physics history (incl. a bhop related change misattributed to “v44.00” (a version that does not exist as of mid-2026), with the removal itself now dated to March 19-25, 2026 by Discord messages (see Section 22), and an ~Aug 2025 speed bug closure). Scrape leaderboards + forum threads via the speedrun.com API before activity stops.
- Fortnite Wiki: Rocket Racing and Wikipedia: Rocket Racing · snapshot both; wikis rot fast once their game shuts down.
- esports.gg track list · checklist for verifying archive completeness.
21.9 Pre October 2026 checklist
- Wayback save page now: Epic removal FAQ, @FortniteStatus post, all 6 fortnite.com news slugs + tag index, all 5 UEFN doc pages (repeat monthly).
- Weekly snapshot of the official island page CCU (383 on 2026-07-11; ~1,000 avg pre announcement per esports.gg; 331,705 launch day per Dot Esports).
- Browser capture bot blocked pages: fortnite.gg leaderboard/CCU/creative directory, fortnitetracker.com, TechRaptor.
- Bulk download r/RocketRacing via Arctic Shift (verify 2026 ingestion); spot check removed content via Reveddit/PullPush.
- Finish DiscordChatExporter runs on the official server (3,140 members) and Rocket Racing League server; include attachments.
- yt-dlp the three key YouTube videos + any track route compilations; upload to archive.org alongside the existing 8 items.
- Scrape speedrun.com leaderboards/forums (final capture in the last week before shutdown).
- Snapshot Fandom wiki, Wikipedia revision, track list references.
- Archive shutdown press set (PC Gamer, Kotaku, Game Informer, Gamerant, Game Developer, Traxion, esports.gg, tracker.gg, PCGamesN).
- Track whether Epic’s April 2026 UEFN car tools shipped and which creator tracks migrated (currently unverified).
- Post shutdown: final CCU datapoint, capture the FAQ/doc pages again to record deletion state.
